Ph.D. Linguistics —
is a computational linguist, visiting scholar at the New York University Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Linguistic String Project (1978-present). Dr. Nhàn is a fellow, and an adjunct associate director in Vietnamese Nôm
and Folk Music Studies of the Center for Vietnamese Philosophy,
Culture & Society of Temple University (2006-present). He is an expert in computer character encoding and was associated with Vietnam’s efforts to standardize quốc ngữ, ideographic-based Nôm script and indic-based Chàm script since 1992. He was a board member of the Brecht Forum and the Connie Hogarth Center for Social Action, and the Institute for Vietnamese Culture & Education, educational non-profit organizations of New York. He was a director of the Vietnamese Heritage Institute and the Vietnamese Nôm Preservation Foundation (1999-2007), He was a founding member of Peeling the Banana (1995-2003), a New York Asian American performing arts collective. Dr. Nhàn is also a co-coordinator
of the Vietnam Agent Orange Relief & Responsibility Campaign (2005-present).
Dr. Nhàn
currently teaches đàn tranh [Vietnamese 16-string zither] at the Folk
Arts–Cultural Treasures Charter School with the support of the Asian
Americans United in Philadelphia (2009-present), and a member of MẮM Mekong Arts & Music
Troupe in New York (2013-present).
